These lovely clients had a clear brief and great attachment to their home which had been extended and modified in a makeshift way over many generations. It was now officially too small for their extended close knit family.
Rather than demolish the entire house (which may have been sensible), we kept the original 4 room + hallway weatherboard ‘kernel’ of the house and used this as a model for the building of two further volumes; the social hub of the house containing new entrance, kitchen, dining and living room, and the parents area containing master bedroom, bathroom, office and laundry.
When the grown up children return to visit, they still feel they are coming ‘home’.
