FLOATING VAMPS
A MURAL FOR family LIFE
A vamp is the upper front part of a boot or shoe, and is also (in jazz and popular music) a short, simple introductory passage, usually repeated several times.
There used to be a Boot Making School and Factory in Erskineville, near to this house. The proportions of the mural wall are similar to that of the human foot, and the theme, based on shoes and feet, is a subtle reflection of family life - all the shoes that get strewn about, in various sizes, as the children grow.
The vertical slot in the middle of the house can be seen from many different rooms in the house and needed a bold approach with a striking colour palette to anchor it as a centre point. The colour play allows for the vibrant green Maple tree to appear in strong contrast against the mural.
I'm so sorry I missed seeing you. This is the first chance I've had to sit down and digest the completed artwork, and it is stunning. All evening I've been catching glimpses: looking out the bathroom window, pointing out the kids vamps to them while they bathe; seeing the colours glow in the sunset out the window when putting them to bed; now seeing it all lit up by our courtyard lights, with a glass of wine in hand, I can say you have surpassed all our expectations, which were already high. Thank you. We feel so lucky to have a custom piece of art in our home, and how lucky are the kids to grow up with that!
