along civic lines
lymesmith mural + supergraphic
This project in Civic Square was completed in a very short time frame as part of the 2022 Canberra Design Festival for the City Renewal Authority. The colours palette references mid-century design, and are drawn from the site itself - yellow/gold columns, black and white architecture, green pencil pines, blue sky - a simple modernist palette.
‘Along Civic Lines’ enlivens the ground plane and ramp walls along a predominantly pedestrian thoroughfare adjacent to the Canberra Theatre Centre and Civic Place in Canberra. The two works, ground plane and ramp, function together to create a colourful public space activation.
The forms, shapes and colours in the artwork are collected from the heritage modernist architecture and sculptures, the new buildings and the striking Pencil Pines which line the lane, recomposed and layered back into the site, producing a visual intensification of the features of the place itself. I am passionate about developing colour palettes (for buildings) that are both memorable and in harmony with their contexts. Site analysis and research is central to my ‘storytelling through colour’ approach.
The mural and laneway supergraphic designed for this space have a lifespan of about 3 years, it’s an artwork that responds to the need for better wayfinding and pedestrian cues along the lanes whilst anticipating the design improvements to come as part of the proposed new theatre project.
