arc angel MURAL

Photo: Amanda Stelcova

Arc Angel was commissioned by terrace house owner Laurel Hixon, who wanted to ‘make people smile when they walk down the street, bring joy and beauty to the Wilson St precinct, and make a gift to my wonderful local community’. The house is in a Heritage Conservation Zone and required Council approval via a DA.

In an interview for the SMH, Laurel describes her mural as “spontaneous community building, an antidote to the glum days of COVID…” Her motivation? “I wanted nothing more than to make people happy,” she said of the project. The result has her giddy with joy. “Nothing else has made me this happy, other than the birth of my son.” (read the full article by Julie Power here)

The word ‘arc’ indicates a change of direction, and an ‘angel’ is essentially a messenger. The Arc Angel announces the intersection of Wilson and Watkins Streets, and energises the public domain with a site specific, contextual artwork.
